NEW!! 2024 USA SOFTBALL AGE QUALIFICATIONS
Division changes go into effect for the 2024 season, starting September 1, 2023.
A player’s age as of September 1st now determines the age a player is eligible to compete the following year. This cutoff date update will more closely align with most school cutoff dates, allowing players to most often play with those in the same grade.
Cypress Girls Softball League will follow USA Softball’s new age qualifications, which are listed on the chart below and goes into effect with the upcoming 2023-2024 Fall and Spring seasons, beginning September 1st.
The following is a breakdown of what the new dates mean:
- CGSL and USA Softball will no longer determine the players age as of January 1, the new date to determine the players age will be September 1.
- If a player was born in September thru December, this basically means the player would be considered eligible to remain in the same age division as they played during the 2023 season for the upcoming Fall (Fall 2023) and Spring seasons (Spring 2024).
- USA Softball encourages players and leagues to play within the new age qualifications, however Individuals may decide if they want to use the new date of 9/1 or keep using the 1/1 date, keeping players born Sept. thru Dec. in their current level or advancing where appropriate.
- Some individuals may choose to not hold back a player for a third year at 8U, 10U, 12U or 14U and move them up with their teammates, which is allowed. However, a player who does not fit into this age group will not be permitted to play down.
Please refer to the USA Softball Code Age Eligibility Chart to determine which age your player is eligible to participate. Players of younger age classification may play in older age classifications, players may not play in the younger age classification. This chart is only in effect for the 2024 season (9/1/2023-8/31/2024).
CGSL introduces new face masks policy (effective August 1, 2023):
- ALL pitchers will be required to wear a fielding face mask during games and/or live pitching during practices. This applies to every pitcher in all age levels: 6U, 8U, 10U, 12U and 14U.
- ALL infield players (1st base, 2nd base, 3rd base, shortstop) are strongly recommended to wear fielding face masks during practice and games. This applies to all age levels: 6U, 8U, 10U, 12U and 14U.
- ALL outfield positions, for all age levels, are also highly encouraged to wear fielding face masks.
This policy is based on growing safety concerns throughout the softball community, and is not exclusive to CGSL. Several other local and regional leagues have implemented similar policies.
A study published by the American Journal of Emergency Medicine, states "being hit by a ball was the most common mechanism of injury (52.4%) and accounted for most of face (89.6%) and head (75.7%) injuries." Pitchers and third base are especially vulnerable to fast moving balls. Additional articles can be found in the Rip-It Blog.
